Technical Assistance
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE OVERVIEW
Harford Soil Conservation District (HSCD) promotes soil and water quality programs that support Maryland’s Watershed Implementation Plan to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay. HSCD works with the Maryland Departments of Agriculture and USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service to address cases of water pollution caused by agriculture. HSCD is a member of the Maryland’s Conservation Partnership, a coalition of federal, state, and local agriculture agencies dedicated to protecting and conserving natural resources and promoting Maryland agriculture.
Landowners, farmers, and horse owners seeking free technical or engineering assistance to design and install best management practices (BMP) on their land to protect natural resources should contact HSCD for assistance. We recommend that a Soil Conservation and Water Quality Plan (aka, a conservation plan) be prepared as a first step toward addressing a resource concern with BMP(s).
The Maryland Agricultural Water Quality Cost-Share (MACS):
The Maryland Agricultural Water Quality Cost-Share (MACS) Program provides farmers with grants to cover up to 87.5 and even 100 percent of the cost to install conservation measures known as best management practices on their farms to prevent soil erosion, manage nutrients and safeguard water quality in streams, rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.
